The Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute focuses on medical imagining and diagnostic related research. Its three main research areas are: imaging guided interventions, advanced detection devices, and probe development and biomarker exploration. Some of its research partners include Lakehead University, Confederation College, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Sunnybrook , Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation and Cancer Care Ontario. They also have student internships, a summer school for medical imaging, career opportunities and a seminar series.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) is a non-profit foundation that promotes basic research in the biomedical field for European researchers studying in Europe or overseas and for those from aboard wishing to study in Europe. It is an organization that supports PhD and/or medical students, postdoctoral fellows and young scientists. They provide scholarships, travel grants and every year hosts two well-known international conferences called the Titisee conferences.
Established in 1982, the Centre for Community-Based Research is a non-profit organization which aims to strengthen communities through social research. They achieve this by evaluating, planning, training, facilitating, and developing programs with communities, government, social and health services, community groups and educational institutions.
